BC's Deep Trouble Releases Debut Double Album Set, Recorded Amid Wildfire Evacuation

October 17, 2024

The Birth of “Pisco”

Canadian rock band Deep Trouble has released their debut recordings as a two-volume album set titled Volume 1: 1st Offense and Volume 2: 2nd Degree. The collection of 20 songs is a relentless sonic journey into their genre-bending sound, which they've branded “Pisco,” a mashup of rock, punk and disco, with a churning, guitar-driven engine. “Pisco is really a mix of the irreverent attitude of punk rock with the hypnotic groove of disco, and a bunch of heavy guitars and a killer beat on top, of course,” says the band's shredder-in-chief Cole Eriksson.

Established Songwriter x  Energetic Upstarts + Wildfire = Deep Trouble's Unique, Powerful Sound

Deep Trouble formed in Sorrento, BC in the summer of 2023 amid a punishing wildfire season. Established songwriter, composer and musician Deep teamed up with three younger musician school buddies, and began recording in Deep's Sorrento studio. As fires encroached, an evacuation order was issued, and flames crept over the nearby hills. Rather than stop their momentum, the band embraced the chaos and adapted by setting up their music studio outdoors. As a result, tracks from their debut such as “Burn It Down” and “Firebell” are infused with fiery imagery and an urgent backbeat, fueled by the sense of impending danger.

Thematically, both albums' cleverly-worded verses and catchy choruses describe everyday gripes, troubled relationships, cynical observations and relatable frustrations, with heavy doses of sarcasm and double meanings. The band's main songwriter Deep describes his writing process as “a kind of cheap therapy. Whatever, or whoever, is bothering me, I'll write a song about it to vent. I'm never at a loss for song ideas!” The tracks “Makin' A Mess” and “Shake Me” are ruminations on those flawed friends we've all had. Tracks such as “Sex Pest” and “Shut the Hell Up" exemplify the Pisco sound. Themes of bravery and aggression inspired by the war in Ukraine also seeped into Deep's writing on a few of the tracks. The standout “Rumble Run” with its thunderous beat, could be an anthem for the front line fighters. Showcasing the band's musical chops, the albums are rounded out by a few tasty instrumental jams, “Escape Plan Hwy,” “Promised Land” and “In Thru Mental,” which give listeners spacey, progressive rock vibes.

Deep Trouble plans to hit the road in support of this release across Canada in winter 2024/2025, and the US and UK in the spring and summer of 2025.
